This bright and fresh microgreen fruit smoothie recipe is a favorite at our house. Microgreens are packed with nutritious antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, and blending them up in a smoothie is a great way to eat a big handful all at one time. It feels good to be drinking something filling and healthy and a great way to start your day or power up your afternoon.
What kind of milk should I use?
We like oat or almond milk because those choices are lower in calories and fat. If you're looking to add calories, then coconut or regular dairy milk works well, and you could add a few tablespoons of full-fat Greek or vanilla yogurt.
What kind of fruit works best?
Frozen fruit! Using frozen fruit will act as ice-cubes and will create a perfectly blended and thick texture. I love to use frozen bananas, mango, pineapple, and any berry that I can pull from the garden or find on sale at the store.
Other additions for your microgreen smoothies.
I love adding in non-sweetened shredded coconut, flaxseed, and sometimes riced cauliflower. The cauliflower gives the smoothie more volume and bulk but without any taste or calories. I might add a tablespoon of honey or sugar substitute, depending on what kind of microgreen I'm using.
Microgreen varieties that work best for smoothies.
Microgreens do taste differently, for sure. Some are sweet, spicy, bitter, peppery, or buttery. I like using a more mild-tasting microgreen like turnip or kale. Then there's sweet pea, an incredible green to use in smoothies. Some radish varieties are more on the mild side, but others can be peppery. If you're buying them at the store, there should be a description somewhere on the package. One of my favorites is broccoli and also a black oil sunflower that I call Sunnies. Another fantastic option is fava bean.

Microgreen Fruit Smoothie
- 1 cup almond milk or oat milk, regular milk, or fruit juice of your choice
- 1 large handful microgreens
- 1 banana frozen
- ½ cup fruit of choice
- 2 teaspoons flaxseed
- ¼ cup shredded coconut
- 2 tablespoon honey (optional) or sweetener of your choice
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend thoroughly.
